There are very few smells that are as putrid as vomit. When you have a pet or child throw up on your carpet, it is all you can do to stop yourself from following suit. This horrific smell can be a difficult one to get out of your carpet fibers once it has settled in there. Luckily, the experts at Heart of Texas Chem-Dry are here to share some tips to help you get rid of the vomit smell from your carpet.
Clean Up Vomit Immediately
Not only is it important that you clean vomit from your carpet properly, but you need to act quickly. If the vomit has time to completely settle into the fibers of your carpet, it is hard to get rid of. If it seeps into the pad beneath your carpet, it is even harder.
How to Clean Fresh Vomit from Your Carpet
Before you get started cleaning the vomit, you will need a few things:
– Hydrogen Peroxide or Vinegar
– Spray Bottle
– Clean, White Cloths
– Garbage Bag
– Gloves
You will want to put gloves on so that you don’t have to touch the vomit. It can pass on illness and is just plain disgusting. You will need to remove any chunks before you can really clean the mess up. Using a plastic spoon or whatever you have on hand, get all the vomit removed as best you can. You will want to dilute the vinegar or hydrogen peroxide with water and put it in your spray bottle. You should spray the area well with the solution and dab it with a white cloth until it completely removed. This should neutralize the smell and get rid of the vomit.
How to Remove Dried, Set in Vomit Stains & Odors
Sometimes, it is impossible to clean up vomit right away. This is especially true when you have a pet that is vomiting in a hidden place. You should still repeat the steps mentioned above to remove it from your carpet, but you may need to add baking soda into the equation. This odor fighting miracle powder will do wonders for removing the smell from your carpet. If the vomit has sat on your carpet for a long period of time, you are going to need the help of baking soda to get rid of that smell that has settled deep into the fibers of your carpet. Once you have removed the chunks from your carpet, generously sprinkle baking soda over the spot. After this step, spray the diluted mixture of vinegar or hydrogen peroxide on top of the baking soda and let it sit. You will need to let this sit for several hours to give it time to work. It is best if you can let it sit overnight. Once it has dried, you can simply vacuum it up and the odor should be gone. Repeat these steps if needed.
