Air ducts are one of the areas inside the home that is never clean and in most cases, forgotten. Air ducts require cleaning as much as the rest of the home. The air ducts are the pathways that the conditioned air travels through and enters into the home. When the air ducts are dirty and full of contaminants, the entire home indoor air quality is compromised. Heart of Texas Chem-Dry would like to share what signs to look for to know if your air ducts need cleaning to ensure a happier and healthier home.
Health Problems from Dirty Air Ducts
The air duct system is one of the primary culprits for poor indoor air quality. When air ducts are neglected they can develop a number of contaminants such as dust, dead skin, mold, pest waste and so much more. As the air travels through the air ducts, everything inside the air ducts come through with the air and will then pollute the inside of your home. For those who have allergies while inside their home, it is usually because the air ducts are dirty. Those with asthma may also have more asthma attacks when the indoor air is badly polluted. Often your own health or the health of others in the home can help tell you that the air ducts are dirty and require cleaning.
Excessive Dust in a House
Another common sign that your air ducts need to be cleaned is dust. When you spend hours cleaning your home to discover a fresh layer of dust shortly thereafter, it can be very disheartening. When you clean and then dust quickly layers over the entire home this is because the air ducts are full of dust and dirt. As the air conditioning or heating system is running, the dust is blown through the air ducts and into your home. When you find your home is always dusty, look to the air ducts as often they need to be cleaned.
Dirty Air Conditioner Filter
Another byproduct of dirty air ducts and a dusty home is very dirty air filters. For those who find they need to change their home air filter once a month or more, this is usually because there is a lot of dust and debris inside the home. As the return vent is sucking up the air inside the home the dust will get sucked up with it. The more dust and debris inside the home, the quicker the air filters will become dirty and clogged in a short period of time. If you have to change out your air filters more than once a month, then it is time to have your air ducts cleaned.
Black Stuff Around Air Vents
You can often see that the air ducts need to be clean. Dust or mold can accumulate around the air vents. Many people will sweep the dirt away from the vents to keep them clean. However, this is only cleaning the surface and not getting to the root of the problem. When there is dust around the outside of the air vents then the air ducts need to be cleaned.
