Types of Water Damage & Restoration Process

The water damage restoration process depends on what type of water has breached the home, how long the water has sat and how much damage was done. Any time water damage has occurred it is of upmost importance to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible to avoid unnecessary damage, mold, mildew growth, or the growth of harmful bacteria. The types of water that can breach a home are put into three basic categories.

Category 1 – Clear Water Intrusion

This water comes from a sanitary source such as a tub or sink overflow, or pipe break that has little health risk involved in the cleanup. If left too long this can turn into a level 2 or 3 A typical clean-up for this type of water damage consists of a thorough extraction of the water, followed up by dehumidification and drying out the carpet and foundation. After everything has been dried out, the team will work to sanitize and clean everything.

Category 2 – Gray Water Damage

This type of water damage comes from overflows from dishwashers, washing machines etc. and has the potential to cause illness if it gets absorbed into the skin, if it is consumed or if it becomes airborne and you breath it in. This type of damage may require carpet to be replaced depending on the level of saturation and the length of time it has been able to sit.

Category 3 – Black Water Health Risks

This is the worst type of water that can enter your home. It comes from grossly contaminated sources that have pathogenic or toxic agents such as toilet backflows, sewage, seawater, overflows from rivers or streams, or surface water that has made its way into your home. This will require a full replacement and leaves no room for a simple restore. Safety measures will be taken to ensure the health of everyone in the vicinity and clean up should be done quickly.
