How to Bring a Rug Back to Life?

1) Vacuum Rugs. Do not treat stains before vacuuming; otherwise you will have a big mess on your hands. The first step in restoring your rug is to extract the as much of the debris as possible. Vacuum thoroughly the top and then the back and repeat the top and back again.
2) Rug Cleanser Selections. After you have completed 2 vacuuming treatments both on front and back read the rug’s label and apply the instructions and warnings. When selecting your cleaner, whether you opt for a DIY cleaner below, another concoction you prefer, or a premade cleaner from the department store, always perform a patch test in an inconspicuous area to make certain it is safe to use on the rug. Examples of DIY rug cleansers:
Shaving Cream: Shaving cream can remove the majority of tough stains. Simply apply a generous amount over the top of all the stains and allow it to set for about 5 minutes and with a damp cloth, wipe clean.
White Vinegar: A multi-use ingredient, white vinegar can be use on its own or in different mixtures. It can dissolve types of stains, neutralize odors, and disinfect germs, among other abilities. It also has the capability to lighten dye, so use with caution. Recommended uses: For severe stains use white vinegar concentrated or enhance it with a squirt of mild liquid dish soap, moderate stains should be equal parts water and vinegar, and mild stains can be 1 part vinegar 3 parts water. Diluting it will help avoid undesired lightening effects.
Mild Dish Soap: Combine 2 tsp liquid dish soap with 2 cups water in a squirt bottle to make a generalized cleaner for most stains. Liquid dish soap can cut through most stains can loosen any compacted soil deep in the fibers. To make the solution stronger add white vinegar. Never use too much cleaner or a residue can develop.
3) Rinse Rug. Once you are satisfied the stains have been removed to the best of your ability, be sure to use a damp cloth to blot out the preferred solution. You can also use a squirt bottle of pure water and a barely damp cloth to do the rinsing as well. Do not over saturate however, or mold and mildew can develop.
4) Dry Rug. Use a clean, dry towel, weighted down if the stains were excessive to absorb the moisture. If the weather permits, open the windows and flip on the fans if applicable to expedite the drying process.
5) Vacuum Rug. After the rug has been completely dried, vacuum the surface again.
