Dry carpet cleaning has become more popular in recent years. You will hear the term very low moisture (VLM). This is a method of carpet cleaning where a minimum amount of water is used and eco-friendly cleaning solutions are applied to the carpets. Chemical dry carpet cleaning can remove an average of 98% of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery and 89% of the airborne bacteria in your home when a sanitizer is added.
Methods of Dry Cleaning Carpet
The dry foam method is where shampoo is applied to your carpet and is allowed to dry. It is then sucked up into a vacuum. A pre-conditioner may or may not be used prior to application. The foam is distributed and agitated with a mechanical brush action. Suspended soil and the foam is extracted by the same machine or with a wet vacuum. This method is popular and very safe for upholstery when a chemical designed for upholstery is chosen. The dry-chem method is similar to dry foam. The major difference is that when a dry chemical is used, the company sets a large cotton bonnet on your carpet. Using a machine, the bonnet spins form side to side, absorbing the dirt in the carpet. After the bonnet is saturated with dirt, another cotton pad is applied. The dry-compound method spreads an absorbent mixture that looks like wet sawdust all over your carpet. A machine brushes the mixture into the carpet, which causes dirt to be absorbed into the mixture. When the mixture dries, a vacuum cleaner sucks up the material from the carpeting. The compound is composed of soft, organic particles which are loaded with cleaning agents. It works by delivering these cleaning agents into the carpet fibers by “brushing in” with a machine. The machine brushes distribute the compound throughout the carpet and clean the fibers in the process. As the soil from the fibers becomes dissolved, the particles reabsorb it like miniature sponges and is “brushed out”, or removed with the machine.
Benefits of Dry Carpet Cleaning
There are reasons that make dry carpet cleaning a good choice. There is no dirt, left-over shampoo, or mess left in your carpet. Only a small amount of moisture and soft, clean fibers are left behind. This also prevents them from re-soiling faster leaving them fresh and clean longer. Dry carpet cleaning uses eco-friendly products, restores filthy carpet and fluffs matted carpet. Encapsulation, sometimes called crystallization, is preformed where a detergent formula is used to break down, surround or encapsulate the soil in the carpet fiber, and the non-sticky powder or crystals can be removed from the carpet by vacuuming.
Commercial Dry Carpet Cleaning Cost
Dry cleaning is beneficial for commercial premises because of the low drying time and therefore can be completed during business hours and employee overtime can be eliminated. Dry carpet cleaning can be less expensive than hot water steam extraction because unlike truck-mounted heater extraction equipment, the truck’s engine doesn’t need to run during the cleaning process. This can make the costs lower and the savings can be passed to the customer. Transportation costs are lower because the company isn’t limited to a big vehicle and can use more fuel-efficient vehicles.
