When we think of all the different stains on our carpet we probably can attribute most of them to our adorable little children or animals. Children and animals bring so much joy into our lives but they are definitely known to be messy. Sometimes the culprit of the mess is actually the adults in our house though. Every adult has had an accident or two that resulted in a stain on their carpet or furniture. One of the most devastating accidents when it comes to our carpet is red wine. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for a glass of red wine to spill onto your carpet accidentally. No one intends to spill it but sometimes life just happens. So when red wine spills on your carpet what should you do?

Treat Red Wine Spill on Carpet Quickly

When you spill your red wine you will want to act quickly. Start blotting the area with an absorbent cloth as soon as you can. You will want to make sure that you do not rub the wine into your carpet. Rubbing it will only result in the wine being pushed further into your carpet.

After Blotting Carpet Stain, Rinse with Cold Water

After you have blotted as much of the wine out as possible you will want to get some cold water. Pour the cold water directly onto the wine stain. This will help dilute whatever red wine is left on your carpet. Once you have the cold water poured onto the stain you will want to keep blotting the area.

Can I Use Salt, Baking Soda or Vinegar on Red Wine Carpet Stains

Once you have done that step there are a few different options that are recommended to finish getting rid of the wine stain on your carpet. One option is to pour salt over the stain while it is still wet. The salt will absorb the wine as it sits on your carpet. You will want to let it sit there for a few hours. Letting the salt sit overnight will not hurt it either though. You will notice your salt will start to turn pink. When the stain seems almost dry you will want to vacuum the salt out of the carpet. Carefully vacuum the salt out of your carpet. Sometimes some salt residue will remain on the carpet. Dampen the carpet with some more cool water and vacuum it again to get rid of the residue. A second method is to use baking soda instead of salt. You will want to make a baking soda paste with a three to one ratio of water to baking soda. Just like the salt, let it sit until dry and then vacuum it up. Yet another method is to use some vinegar. After you have poured cold water on the stain and blotted it up you are ready for the vinegar. Mix two cups or warm with one tablespoon white vinegar and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. Get a sponge and dip it into the bowl. Blot the stain with the solution until the stain has lifted.
