Basically, when you have a spot, the outer edges of the carpet fibers are the only part of the carpet that is affected, and it can be easily cleaned up. When the spot is allowed to sit on the fibers for a long time it becomes a stain because discoloration is left behind after cleanup takes place.
How to Know if You are Dealing with a Spot or a Stain
The best way to know if you have a spot or a stain on your hands is to witness the accident. Then you know it is no more than a spot and you can quickly clean it up. However, this doesn’t always happen. If you notice something on your carpet, you can put on some gloves and feel the carpet. If there is a texture difference, you are more than likely dealing with a spot, but if the carpet feels similar to the carpet surrounding it, you probably have a stain.

The pros will tell you that a spot can turn into a stain after about 24 hours after the accident happens. This is why it is important that you deal with spills as soon as you notice they have happened. You can usually clean a spot fairly easily with a carpet cleaner and clean rag. You simply blog away the spot until you have completely removed it. Stains are a different story though. They are much more difficult to remove on your own.
