There are several flooring choices for commercial buildings. One that is usually a common choice is VCT flooring because of its durability and lack of maintenance required to keep it looking good. Even the floor is a low maintenance a floor, it still does require some upkeep to ensure you get as many years as possible out of the floor. Heart of Texas Chem-Dry is here to talk what VCT maintenance looks like and why it’s important.
VCT Floors Are Prone to Scratches
VCT floors are nearly destructible. However, the wax coating on top of them can get scratched when in high traffic areas. When this happens, it can leave the floor looking dull and less that impressive. This is why it is so important to have the floor stripped and waxed every 6-9 months. This will help your VCT flooring look as good as possible and extend the life of your floor.
Professional VCT Stripping & Waxing Process
Like mentioned above, stripping and waxing your VCT flooring is vital to its longevity. Here is what you can expect from that process.
– Prepping: The floor needs to be completely cleared of obstacles before the stripping and waxing process can begin. This means that any furniture and rugs that are present should be removed. Also, the floor can’t be walked on until the process is complete so signage will need to be in place to let your patrons know.
– Wax Removal: The old wax on the floor needs to be removed to get things going. An industrial strength chemical is used to remove this wax. The chemicals need to sit on the surface for about 5-10 minutes and then an abrasive pad is used to get rid of it with ease.
– Cleaning: there will be some sludge left behind when the abrasive pad is used on the floor. This will need to be removed using a wet vac or a mop before the new wax can be applied to the surface. It is vital that the floor has ample time to completely dry before new wax is applied.
– Wax Application: For most commercial floors, there needs to be about 3-5 layers of wax on the surface of the floor to protect them. As these coats are put on the floor, each coat will need to have time to dry completely before the next coat is applied.
– Buffing: The final stage of the process is to buff the surface. There is a large, high-speed buffer used to ensure the surface of the floor is glossy and smooth. This is a great way to make sure that wax was evenly distributed as well.
