Getting nail polish out of carpet is not easy, but if you use the right technique and supplies, it can be possible. Remember not to panic but get to it as quickly as you can and don’t forget to test the solution you want to use on an inconspicuous area of your carpet to make sure it won’t discolor it or damage it. There are a few methods you can try. How effective they are will all depend on the size of the stain, the type of carpet and how long the stain has been there.
How to Get Nail Polish Stains Out of Carpet
Wet nail polish– Use a clean cloth or paper towel and dab as much of the nail polish as you can, but do not scrub. Dabbing the stain will absorb as much of the nail polish as possible without making the stain worse. Use a clean section of the cloth or paper towel as you go so you won’t spread the stain. You can then use non-acetone nail polish remover to get the rest of the stain out. Repeat as much as needed, making sure you use a clean section as of the cloth with the step as well.
Dry nail polish– The first thing you need to do is get the stain wet with cold water and spray enough hairspray to saturate it. Then add a few splashes of rubbing alcohol and scrub the stain with a scrub brush. As you scrub, slowly pour cold water onto the stain and repeat until the stain is gone. It is always best to get nail polish removed when it is wet, but these methods should be effective. If you need to scrub, do it gently or you may potentially damage the carpet fibers. This damage can’t be repaired and will make the spot where the stain was noticeable. If these methods have been unsuccessful, you can try a couple of other methods.
Window cleaner– With a nail polish stain that is still wet, you still need to blot as much of the stain as possible first then spray a small amount of window cleaner. The amount you use will depend on the size of the stain. With another clean cloth or a sponge, you can rub the stain gently in a circular motion. Then you will rinse with cold water and let it dry. Once it’s completely dry, the stain should be gone.
Hairspray– This method works better for dry nail polish but can be effective with wet. Use a clean cloth to absorb as much of the nail polish as you can and add an ample amount of water to get it wet. You will then add hairspray and use a toothbrush to scrub the area for a couple of minutes. Repeat until the stain is gone.
